Our approach combines in-depth archival and provenance research with non-destructive material analysis to investigate an artwork without compromising its physical integrity.

Provenance & Archival Research

We undertake detailed research to reconstruct and verify the artwork’s historical ownership chain. This may involve examining available auction records, exhibition histories, collection records, catalogues raisonnés, archival documents, invoices, labels, inscriptions, photographs, publications, and other relevant historical sources.

Where records permit, the research seeks to establish:

• Previous owners and collections associated with the artwork

• Auction and transaction history

• Exhibition and publication history

• Historical documentation and archival references

• Gaps or inconsistencies within the stated ownership history

• Connections between the artwork, artist, galleries, dealers, collectors, estates, or institutions

• Supporting evidence relevant to the work’s attribution and provenance

The objective is to develop a documented chain of provenance and assess whether the available historical evidence is consistent with the artwork’s stated identity and history.

Non-Destructive Material Analysis

Where appropriate, Gargas Auctions coordinates or undertakes non-destructive examination of the artwork and its physical characteristics. This allows relevant materials and construction techniques to be assessed while preserving the integrity of the work.

Depending on the artwork and analytical requirements, examination may consider pigments, supports, surfaces, signatures, inscriptions, underdrawings, previous restorations, ageing patterns, construction techniques, and other material characteristics.

The findings are assessed against what would reasonably be expected from the attributed artist, period, geographical origin, and artistic technique.

Authenticity Assessment

The historical and material evidence is considered together to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the artwork. Rather than relying on a single indicator, the assessment considers the relationship between provenance, documentary evidence, materials, technique, condition, stylistic characteristics, and known information about the artist or period.

Where appropriate, external specialists, conservators, laboratories, artist foundations, archives, estates, or other recognised authorities may be consulted where their expertise is necessary.

Research Report

At the conclusion of the engagement, the client receives a structured report presenting the research undertaken, evidence identified, analytical observations, provenance findings, identified uncertainties or gaps, and the resulting professional assessment.

Supporting documentation and relevant references may also be incorporated where available.

The report can provide valuable supporting information for private acquisitions, auction consignments, collection management, estate administration, insurance documentation, scholarly research, and future sale considerations.
